Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in:
Winter Park & Fraser, Colorado
Winter Park and Fraser are located along the Fraser River in the Fraser Valley in Central Colorado. The valley can be reached from Interstate 70 by going over Berthoud Pass along Highway 40. This area is also to the southwest of Rocky Mountain National Park and south of Tabernash and Granby.
This is a very beautiful area that is about a 1.5 hours drive from Denver. The valley is wide and very pretty. In the summer, the valley floor is lush with green grass and blooming flowers. Elk and deer can often be seen grazing on the valley floor. The Indian Peaks range is located to the east of the valley and the Vassquez Mountains with Byers Peak are to the west.
The Winter Park area also has a 600-mile system of mountain bike tracks for a range of abilities. Ski lifts take riders and their bikes to the top of the lift and there are single tracks to get to the base. There are also miles of trails in the hills to the north of the ski area.
Fraser River Trail
The Fraser River Trail is a 5-mile long paved pathway that follows along side the river and goes from Fraser, through the town of Winter Park and then south to the base of the ski area.
There is also an 1.7-mile long unpaved pathway on the south side of Fraser that is located to the east of the highway and travels above the meanders in the river. This portion of the trail connects to the paved trail at Rendezvous Road.
The paved trail follows Highway 40 in the north portion. Along this part of the route, there are beautiful views of the wetlands along the river and the mountains to each side of the valley. In the community of Winter Park, the trail goes past the shops, restaurants and parks in town.
South of Winter Park, the trail wanders through the evergreen forest and goes past campgrounds, wetlands and meadows. The trail ends to the north of the base of the ski area where you can find the shops, restaurants and condominiums.
Fraser to Granby Trail
The Fraser to Granby Trail is a 4-mile long unpaved pathway that follows alongside Highway 40 between the two communites.
